IT WAS A VERY WARM morning, more than usual, but Windy barely noticed as she tooled her perfectly matched bays homeward. She was in a quandary of irritation and trying to find a way out of her predicament.
She had taken extra care when she donned her pastel shade of green driving ensemble and matched it to a top hat with a light netting on top of her black curls, which she piled on top of her head and allowed to cascade down her back. All this to impress her solicitor and agent with her maturity.
Her appearance had not moved them from their hardened position one bit. All they would say, over and over again, was that her aunt was her guardian until she was twenty-one. They further added that Lord Braywardâs proposal was economically sound and would go a long way to rescuing Brabant finances.
Infuriating. She had but one recourse. She would have to tell her aunt that this would cause a rift between them, and one that would harm their future relationship. She would not have Brayward, whom she despised, tell her how to run Brabant.
All this was enough, she told herself, to try the soul of a maid of patience, and she had never deemed herself lucky enough to have this enviable attribute. If that wasnât enough to harass her morning, she saw coming towards her, Peter Holmes, who she liked very well, but with him was his American houseguest.
How embarrassing to have to confess she was unable to convince her solicitors she was in charge.
Lord, she wished she were anywhere else but on this road with them definitely slowing to stop her progress. Well, she might as well get the humiliating moments out of the way.
âHo, there, Windy mâgirl,â Peter called out jovially. âWe were just on our way to Brabant.â
âWere you? Well then, if you accompany me, we can dine together and be comfortable,â she said, looking only at Peter, though it was a strain to keep her eyes off the captain. She was torn, wishing they would decline, and yet hoping they would not. All at once, she could not stop herself and looked towards the captain to find his very speaking eyes. There was a story in those blue eyes, and she admitted to herself she wanted to know that story.
âSplendid notion, mâgirl. It seems Lance here has some problem with your aunt and Brayward and perhaps together we can get it all worked out. What do you think?â Peter suggested amiably.
âApparently my aunt is at the heart of our problem. She doesnât trust herself to run the plantation, thinks I am too young, and being a female, I shouldnât, and apparently means to rely on Brayward. My solicitor agrees with her decision in this matter. It is most provoking.â
âHas the sugar already been processed?â Lance asked quietly.
âYes,â she said, meeting his eyes again. Faith, but he was devastatingly handsomeâ¦no, it was more than that. It was the way he held himself, the height and breadth of himâ¦and his aura, so very much in command.
